My neighbor, Nancy, tracked me down at a social function.
“Please tell me again how I can find your new website?” Nancy asked. But what I heard in her voice was exhaustion – and, well, some panic.
So I handed her one of my business cards which, of course, says AgeSmart411.com – so she can find us…. But I then asked her, “Were you looking for anything in particular?”
She sighed. “It’s Thomas.” (Thomas is her husband.) He got a phone call yesterday and I listened to him as he gave away his birthday, his social security number, and other information. I tried to stop him, but he had already told them those things. He hung up the phone and told me he had to go Walmart to get gift cards! I knew it was a scam, but all he could tell me was that they were going to call him back and ask for the code numbers. And then told me to get out of his way so he could go there! I’m so upset and I don’t know where to turn!”
OMG! Now What?
OK. At that point it wasn’t exactly 2 AM, but Nancy told me she had been awake all night worrying about what had happened, and searching all over the internet to find out what to do. She said she had talked him out of going to buy the gift cards, but she is now worried because those scammers now have all that information.
I don’t blame her. I’d be upset too! (Not to mention how worried I would be about Thomas doing it again.)
